Abetone

Abetone is a municipality in the province of Pistoia ( Tuscany ) located 60 km northwest of Florence, 30km northwest of Pistoia.

The population of Abetone counts only about 700 inhabitants but, being the most important ski resort in Italy (not considering the Alps ), in winter thousands of tourists arrive: both day tourism and holidays are common choices.

 

The word Abetone in italian means 'large fir': the place has been named after a huge tree that was cut during the construction of the road that connects Pistoia to Modena in 1732.

The village of Abetone is exactly on the border between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna.

 

With more than 50 km of slopes Abetone attracts day skiers from the entire northern Tuscany and specially from the provinces of Pistoia, Prato, Florence, Lucca and Massa as well as from Emilian provinces of Modena and Bologna.

The main income stream of the population of Abetone is tourism in fact you'll experience excellent hospitality, delicious food and you can expect fast ski lifts with short queues or, more frequently, no queues at all.

 

All the ski lifts have been renovated during the last years and to assure excellent show coverage 110 snow cannons have been placed on most slopes.

The network of slopes has been designed in order not to require you to drive in your entire vacation: from any starting point you can reach any slope in the resort: moreover the skipass is valid for every slopes.

For nordic skiers, 18 kms of nordic ski tracks have recently been added completed in this area.
